The Last Step

Danube bank, 1944-45. The empty, bronze shoes monument. “How many figures emerge from those dusty shoes? How many different figures are born to die? And if your walk rigorously, there in the far distant bank, you will see them holding your hand tightly, with a glimmer of hope in their dark eyes looking away. You will see them, you will see us, as if we were there for many years. With only luggage the heaviest, but most beautiful shoes, dancing with that hurried and oh-so-exhausted pulse of waiting…”
