KINETIC

counterpoint

Kinetic Counterpoint is a movement practice that aims to enhance the relationship between the mover and their body within space by linking different ideas in order to create new connections and combinations. Through this practice we can discover how contrasting elements can co-exist and result in a dynamic interplay.

BACKGROUND:

Kinetic refers to the movement or motion of objects.

In art, kinetic sculptures and installations are often interactive works that involve movement or change. Kinetic art can be created using a range of materials and techniques and is often designed to engage the viewer in a dynamic way.

Counterpoint (music theory) refers to the art of combining melodies in a harmonious way. Two or more melody lines are played at the same time and are independent in rhythm and contour, but also dependent on each other in order to create harmony. These interwoven melodies create cohesive and expressive musical pieces.

When a body moves, different body parts work interdependently in order to synthesize motion. Thus, it can be argued that the very notion of a moving body is contrapuntal. Motor skill learning requires different body parts working reciprocally to create kinetic melodies that have flow and rhythm. Kinetic Counterpoint seeks to explore how various elements can complement and contrast each other in order to form harmonious body polyphonies.

CLASSES & WORKSHOPS:

The class will consist of floorwork and travelling in the space, as well as the use of soft and sharp movement qualities. We will challenge ourselves physically and mentally in order to explore new ways of moving. We will begin by experimenting with improvisational tasks and move on to set phrases using the space and different dynamics, with the intention of expanding the body’s possibilities. During the second part, we will learn a longer combination with a focus on articulation and musicality.
